The IPL mega auction is set to be held ahead of the IPL 2025 season. The BCCI even held a meeting with franchise owners a few days back in order to get feedback and discuss the possible changes to the current structure of the auctions.
Topics like the Impact Player rule, increment or decrement of retention rules were the main agendas of the topic, however, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a different agenda on their mind altogether.

The five-time champions proposed to bring back a certain rule that would help them retain their former captain, MS Dhoni for the upcoming IPL season.
Dhoni’s plans for the upcoming season still remains a mystery, the player himself revealed in a recent interview that he would take a decision once the retention rules are made official by the BCCI in order to take a decision that fits well with the team.
The BCCI are reportedly bringing back the rule ahead of the 2025 season. In the scenario that the rule is bought back, it would provide a major boost to CSK’s wish of retaining the veteran keeper ahead of the upcoming IPL season.

How can CSK retain MS Dhoni?
According to the rule that was scrapped back in 2021, if a player has not featured in international cricket for five or more years, they can be considered to be uncapped.
Since Dhoni last played for India in the 2019 ODI World Cup, he could be considered as an uncapped player in the 2025 season, if this rule is reinstated.

How does this rule help CSK?
One of the major reasons why CSK would prefer the return of the rule and consider Dhoni uncapped is to save a retention spot.
Each team is likely to get around 4-6 player retentions. If CSK are able to retain Dhoni as an uncapped player, they will be able to retain their other major players using the main retention spots.
It also saves them money as uncapped players are likely to be on lower salary.
